Welcome to The Kinetoscope
Hello! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I’m Ben. I like films and this is a space for my writing on films I am watching.
If you don’t know where to start reading, start here.
I also co-host a film podcast, Deep Cut, with my lovely friends Wilson and Eli. We’ve been going strong since 2021 (and a friendship that dates back even further!)
You can find less filtered, sometimes unhinged thoughts on my Letterboxd.
You can find my links at my personal site: benjaminyap.me
I am currently based in Singapore. I was a participant at the Youth Critics Programme at SGIFF. Here’s my essay from the programme.
Why The Kinetoscope?
This is a kinetoscope.
It was invented in 1891 in the early days of film. Before we had cinemas, we had these personal peep-show like devices for an audience of one. They would line these up in an arcade, and you could see multiple people peering into worlds unknown (probably some dude eating a cake or something).
Thus, the logo depicts two hands cupping an imaginary viewfinder, looking through a window to cinema. Much like how I think cinema-going is a personal journey, this newsletter is a personal one. The writing here presents the perspective of an audience of one: me.
